Summer Gravity Camps partners with Acrobag

by Summer Gravity Camps
Jun 20, 2011 at 13:03

The Acrobag is an advanced airbag system that allows riders to safely master air-awareness and jumping techniques in a controlled environment.

“SGC is the premier freeride MTB camp and Acrobag has trained some of the world’s top action sports athletes, therefore aligning ourselves is a natural fit for one another. New limits will be reached in Whistler this summer!” says Marc-André Tarte from Acrobag.

All visiting campers will be able to train with exclusive access to the Acrobag with the world’s top freeride athletes, rubbing shoulders with coaches like Brandon Semenuk, Cam Zink and Cam & Tyler McCaul.

Brandon Semenuk talks about his first encounter with the Acrobag:
"The first airbags I had a chance to test were far from the perfect practice tool. It was like jumping into a trampoline, the air had nowhere to go, except for back at you. My thoughts were quickly changed once I tried the AcroBag. AcroBag is the future of training for action sports. It is safe, movable, weather-proof and it can handle big impacts”

“We’ve been in the market for an airbag for some time now as we recognize the inherent benefits of using airbags as a training utility. Everything from being able to effortlessly walk off the airbag, to the controlled air-release mechanism, makes the Acrobag an ideal tool for SGC, where safety and progression go hand in hand” says Andrew Shandro, SGC Camp Director.

In addition to the Acrobag, SGC will be providing access to the airdome everyday of camps. The Acrobag will be located at the top of the Red Bull Joyride Slopestyle course next to the mulch jump.

The Founder of Acrobag started the Airbag movement in 2009 by selling the first airbag. Acrobag now offers their products and services worldwide. Check out Acrobag at www.acrobag.org

Summer Gravity Camps is the premier week-long freeride mountain bike camp based out of the world-renowned facilities of Whistler Mountain Bike Park. For More information visit www.summergravitycamps.com

You guys are right, we have nothing over SGC. COC has the smallest coach to camper groups with 1 coach for 3 riders, amazing bikes from 11 different manufacturers, ride along mechanics, and 3 hours more riding a day. SGC has us completely beat. Next year we will have bigger groups, less bikes and less riding so we can compete.

SGC sucked when I did it a couple years ago, they were too lazy to take us to the river jumps even though we asked to go all week. Coaches didn't really do any coaching they just ride behind you, not really coaching if you ask me. If I could do it again I'd just rent a hotel room with some buds and ride whatever I want instead... Plus my photo from the professional photographer sucked shit

Its truly all Opinion, I have gone to SGC for a few years now and am going this summer, I love it best week of the year and I’ve meet alot of good guys there. I ride all day, and coaches are always down to go to jumps or pumptracks, the coaches always help me improve, groups were never large, in fact 2 days last year I had 2hours of individual coaching! Sterling Lorence is one of the best photographers in our sport and the fact is sometimes there is only so much you can do with a rider to make an amazing photo. Anyways I love SGC and the airbag is one more addition to help, without them I wouldn't be where I am today!

COC is the first one listed on the main page under "Bike Camps", so its clearly the best....

Logically correct statement? No, but neither are some of the comments posted here. Its just an air bag. I would assume both camps have their many distinct competitive advantages, otherwise two camps could not financially exist in one town...

I'm at the age where if I attended either camp I'd likely be labeled some form of "old creepy dude" so I can't say for myself, but, some of you here are probably "well off", so if you've been to both camps why not start a discussion thread somewhere other than on an article mentioning a new air bag at SGC this summer.

P.S. Its nice outside, let's ride

wow Ken from camp of champs seems like he feels a little intimidated hahah. At least SGC doesn't comment on posts from coc trying to divert attention to their camps... I guess it's because they have enough money from MORE campers going to their camp to advertise the real way...in Decline magazine, on here, etc. Just thought that post from CoC above was a little unprofessional. SGC has better coaches anyway. Who even cares though, just being in Whistler is f*cking sick!
  • - 1
flag AdamLaycockPhoto (Jun 21, 2011 at 19:27)
So travelling around north america with the airbag to try FOR FREE isn't good enough advertising for you? And then making videos of you while riding that airbag for free? And the post above was stating what makes CoC unique. There's nothing unprofessional about it. CoC has Mike. Nuff said.

flag diebel7 (Jun 21, 2011 at 21:12)
OOooo.. one good rider.. cool bro. And CoC should not get into who had what first.. SGC has been around for longer that Coc (the biking Coc at least..not sure about the snowboarding portion) so as far as im concerned one could argue that CoC copied SGC with the whole idea for a camp. I had no problem with COC before, and was actually choosing between them. But those comments completely swayed me towards SGC. And who cares if people are talking about the disadvantages that's the point of PB, so riders can discuss their opinions.

flag rippin-norco (Jun 21, 2011 at 21:27)
@ Ken, calm down. Personally, I really liked SGC when i went last year! But its just my opinion, who cares what the "Coach to rider ratio" is? Big deal, its all riding right? If we all love to ride, why argue over which camp is better? *cough*SGC*cough* Wink ehh its all jokes.

flag hoolydooly (Jun 21, 2011 at 22:51)
Ill admit i have done no research towards COC at all. ever. only just went on their website then. i will admit it is pretty good. I like the bigger selection of bikes and the fact that they are sponsored by Xbox, not f*cking Nintendo Wii. the extra 3 hours of riding is good. but i think COC is more DJ based where as SGC is more gravity based.

Sorry ken, shouldn't have said that without any research into the camp. you have every right to defend your company that you have put hours upon hours of work into.

flag tysonb (Jun 21, 2011 at 23:17)
sgc camper ratio is fine, when i went we had 6 camper to 2 coaches and it was perfect i thought, you can choose to ride the same amount of time that coc does or go to the airdome which coc does not have the option of doing, coc basically only has the fact that they spend all their budget on building amazing demos bikes.....
  • + 7
flag tysonb (Jun 21, 2011 at 23:21)
p.s. i like how all of the shots in cocs videos are 98 percent pros where there will be the odd camper where sgc actually puts their campers in their videos....

Well, coming from Australia where there's practically zero camps, either would be pretty amazing. Too many haters here. From my point of view from what i've seen from both, they're both seriously good stuff, and having competitors in the business can only mean moving forward and the camps getting better and better. Ken has every right to come and defend his own business against what seems dim-witted people who haven't experienced both.

why do you guys care about who came up with "what" first. Its all about personal prefference, some people like SGC better than CoC and vice versa. Both allow you to meet cool people, meet and ride with pro riders, chill with friends, ride alot, and be in whistler, if you ask me thats a pretty good deal right there. So either one would be good Razz and if you have the money to try out one of the camps or even both of the camps, you'll still be satisfied with both of the camps. Both will have something different for the better or worse but both will allow you to have fun which is all the matters.

I've hit both styles of bags and I will tell you the Big Air Bag that COC has is so much better than the bag SGC has. For starters the AcroBag is single chamber so if the pressure is wrong in the bag you could have a bad day/ to hard hit your face/too soft hit the ground...the BAB is dual chamber so you can never hit the ground and the top layer is always pillowy soft...the BAB is so easy to get out of with it's dome shape AB you have to climb you way out the side, plus I hit the COC bag for free in Victoria and it was sick...never seen SGC drive a bag around so you can hit it without going to their camp.

AcroBag has two chambers and a superior Air-Release. Brandon Semenuk says it all!
Let's stick to the positive @cnote357. I could also write things like: BAB is more of a ziplock type bag that can bounce its participants if over-inflated, you can hit through to the ground if you land near the narrow domed sides.

But both AirBags have a lot to offer in terms of progression. They offer an amazing opportunity. Again its a question of preference. The main thing is to progress your tricks to the real thing. Whatever it takes!

Acrobag did not start the Air Bag Movement. We had our first bag in 2008 with BagJump. Marc work for BagJump in 2009, then knocked it off and started Acrobag. Congrats on getting an Air Bag. Great idea. They are the best thing ever for learning.

@campofchampions: Ken, please keep your incorrect and derogatory comments to a minimum. In other words, please stick to the facts. I partnered up with the previous AirBag company you mention and sold their first AirBag in the world. A year later, we divorced, I then moved onto better things, AcroBag. Stay positive! Stay true, be you!

@sexley, there is also the advantage that you can roll out of your tricks instead of coming to an unchallenging foam pit stop.
